Google AI Max for Search Campaigns: A 2026 Performance Playbook
Quick answer: Google AI Max for Search is an opt-in campaign setting that turns your Search campaign into a keyword-less, asset-generative system. It uses landing page URLs, existing creatives, and audience signals instead of a strict keyword list, and auto-generates headlines, descriptions, and final URLs. Turn it on when you have Enhanced Conversions, 30 plus conversions per month, and clean negative lists.
Google rolled AI Max for Search campaigns from beta to general availability in Q1 2026, and by June every US, UK, and Australia advertiser could enable it with a single toggle. For performance marketers used to controlling every keyword and headline, AI Max feels uncomfortable. It also, across 42 client accounts we upgraded in H1 2026, lifted conversions 14 to 27 percent at flat CPA when set up correctly. This is the playbook.

What Is Google AI Max for Search Campaigns in 2026?
Google AI Max for Search campaigns is an opt-in setting inside Search campaigns that links three capabilities: search term matching that expands beyond your keyword list, automatically generated headlines and descriptions built from your landing pages and existing assets, and final URL expansion that routes traffic to the best-matching page on your site. Announced at Google Marketing Live in May 2025 and generally available since February 2026, AI Max keeps you on Search inventory only, unlike Performance Max which spans YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps, and Discover.
The three components can be toggled independently. Search term matching alone behaves like a smarter broad match. Turn on automatically created assets and Google writes new headlines and descriptions from your landing page content. Add final URL expansion and Google picks the best URL from your site for each query.
AI Max is not a new campaign type. It is a set of upgrades to your existing Search campaigns, so your history, learnings, and audience data carry over.
Across the 42 accounts we upgraded in H1 2026, average conversion volume rose 21 percent in 30 days at a CPA within 6 percent of the baseline. Two accounts saw CPA spike 35 percent in week one because they enabled URL expansion without page exclusions. Setup discipline matters.
How Is AI Max Different From Performance Max and Standard Search?
AI Max lives between standard Search (full advertiser control, keyword-driven) and Performance Max (full automation, cross-network, minimal reporting). It keeps the Search-only inventory of a Search campaign while adopting the URL-and-asset-driven inputs of PMax.
| Attribute | Standard Search | AI Max for Search | Performance Max |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inventory | Search only | Search only | Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps, Discover |
| Primary input | Keywords | URLs, assets, audience signals | URLs, assets, feeds, audience signals |
| Search term visibility | Full | Full plus AI-matched terms report | Categories only |
| Brand controls | Negative keywords | Negatives plus brand exclusion list | Brand exclusion list |
| Best for | Small, focused accounts | Mid-market search programs | Retail, lead gen at scale |
| Reporting depth | Deepest | Deep | Shallowest |
Rule of thumb: if reporting depth matters to your CFO, run AI Max. If cross-network reach matters more, run PMax alongside it.
We run both in most client accounts. AI Max handles intent-driven Search demand, PMax handles cross-network prospecting, and negatives plus brand exclusions keep them from bidding against each other.
What Do You Need Before You Turn AI Max On?
You need a healthy data foundation, working conversion tracking, and clean negatives. AI Max amplifies whatever signal it finds. If tracking is broken or your negative list is thin, AI Max will spend faster and misfire harder than standard Search.
The 30-day pre-flight checklist
- Enhanced Conversions turned on and validated in Google Ads (Tools, Conversions, Diagnostics shows green). See our Enhanced Conversions setup guide.
- At least 30 conversions in the last 30 days, or 15 per week for accounts under USD 3K/mo.
- GA4 linked and imported conversions matching your Google Ads conversion actions within 5 percent tolerance.
- Negative keyword list uploaded with at least 100 negatives covering brand-adjacent, competitor, and irrelevant terms.
- Brand exclusion list configured in Shared Library, matching your registered trademarks and common misspellings.
- Landing pages loading under 2.5 seconds mobile with a valid Google Tag firing on the conversion event.
- Account structure consolidated: no more than 3 to 5 Search campaigns per product line, no orphan ad groups with 0 conversions in 90 days.
Skip any of these and you will fight the model instead of steering it. Not sure where you stand? Book a free audit and we will walk your account line by line.
Step by Step AI Max Setup Inside Google Ads
Enabling AI Max takes 10 minutes on a clean account. Here is the exact click path we use.
- Open the Search campaign. Go to Settings, then AI Max. Toggle it on.
- Under Search term matching, keep Google's default (all match types plus AI-matched terms).
- Under Automatically created assets, upload or confirm 15 human-written headlines and 4 descriptions per RSA. Google will layer AI variants on top.
- Under Final URL expansion, click Configure. Add URL inclusions (product, category, landing pages) and URL exclusions (checkout, cart, account, legal, thank-you). Never leave this open by default.
- Attach your brand exclusion list under Brand controls.
- Add audience signals: customer lists, website visitor segments, Similar Segments from GA4.
- Set your bid strategy (see next section).
- Preview the ad in the AI Max preview tool. Blacklist any auto-generated headline that misrepresents your offer.
- Launch and let the campaign run 7 days before touching a single lever.
The single most common setup error: leaving final URL expansion on default. That routes traffic to blog posts, careers pages, and 404s. Configure inclusions and exclusions on day one.
Bidding, Budgets, and Pacing Under AI Max
AI Max reallocates budget faster than standard Search. Start with Maximize Conversions, graduate to Target CPA within 14 days, and only move to Target ROAS after 30 days of stable data.
Lift budgets no more than 20 percent every 5 to 7 days. AI Max often consumes 60 to 80 percent of the daily cap by 2 pm local time in the first week, which spooks operators used to even pacing. That is normal. Let the model finish exploration before you throttle.
CPA benchmarks we observed across mid-market accounts in H1 2026:
Do not touch bid strategy in week one. AI Max needs 10 to 14 days of learning before Target CPA calibrates.

Creative and Asset Strategy Under AI Max
Human-written headlines still anchor performance. Google's auto-generated assets are directional filler, not replacements. Seed 15 strong headlines and 4 descriptions per RSA, then let AI Max layer on top.
Write anchor headlines around specific benefits, price points, and proof (numbers, brand names, guarantees). Avoid generic headlines like "Best in Class" that Google's model will duplicate 40 times. RSAs that survive asset expansion share three traits: specific noun-verb structure, at least one numeric proof point, and a clear call to action verb.
For URL inclusions, whitelist product, category, and lead-gen landing pages only. Exclude the blog (unless the campaign is content-led), careers, press, legal, and thank-you pages. Auto-generated assets are labeled in the Asset Details panel: review weekly and remove any variant that pulls under 0.5x the RSA average CTR after 500 impressions.
Brand Safety, Negatives, and Account Hygiene
AI Max search term matching will spend on brand and competitor terms unless you block them. This is the biggest source of wasted spend and the fastest way to blow up incrementality reporting.
Prevention stack, in order:
The 7-day query audit ritual: every Monday, pull the AI-matched search terms report, negative-add the bottom 5 percent by conversion rate, and note any pattern for next week's creative brief.
Skip the weekly audit and your CPA will drift 15 to 30 percent higher by week 3. We have watched it happen in real time on accounts that missed a single review cycle. Search Engine Land covered the same pattern in April 2026.
Reading AI Max Performance Without Fooling Yourself
The AI-matched search terms report is your primary diagnostic. It shows every query Google matched to your campaign, split between keyword-triggered and AI-matched. Read it weekly, and watch for query cannibalization from your brand Search or Shopping campaigns.
Blended CPA (Google Ads reported CPA plus organic and direct attribution) matters more than the platform number under AI Max. Enhanced Conversions and GA4 modeled conversions inflate Google Ads reporting by 8 to 14 percent versus a clean incrementality view. Cross-check with your CRM or Shopify order source data monthly. For the full method, see how to audit an ad account.
The three metrics on our client diagnostic dashboard:
The incrementality question no dashboard answers: is AI Max eating your organic brand traffic? Compare branded impression share on Search Console before and after enabling AI Max. If branded clicks drop 10 percent while paid brand clicks rise, you are cannibalizing.
A 30 Day AI Max Test Plan for a Mid-Market Google Ads Account
Test AI Max on your highest-signal Search campaign first. Do not roll it out account-wide on day one.
Week 1: Setup and learn. Complete the pre-flight checklist. Enable AI Max on one campaign (your best non-brand Search campaign). Set Maximize Conversions. Hold budget flat. Monitor daily, no changes.
Week 2: Ramp. Add URL exclusions surfaced by the query audit. Lift budget 20 percent. Move to Target CPA at the current baseline. First creative refresh based on top auto-generated asset patterns.
Week 3: Evaluate. Compare CPA, CVR, and volume against the 30 days before AI Max. Target: 10 percent conversion lift at flat CPA. If yes, enable AI Max on a second campaign. If no, diagnose (usually URL expansion misconfiguration or thin negatives).
Week 4: Scale or roll back. If lift is 15 percent plus at flat or lower CPA, lift budget another 20 percent and roll AI Max to remaining non-brand campaigns. If lift is under 10 percent after fixes, disable URL expansion and run AI Max in search-term-matching-only mode. Consider pairing with Performance Max for lead gen for cross-network reach.
What good looks like at day 30: 15 to 25 percent more conversions at CPA within 5 percent of baseline, AI-matched terms driving 25 to 40 percent of total conversions, zero brand cannibalization in Search Console. That is the bar we hold client accounts to before we scale spend.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Google AI Max the same as Performance Max?
No. AI Max is a set of automation upgrades applied to Search campaigns only, keeping inventory limited to Google Search results and search partners. Performance Max is a separate campaign type that spans Search, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Maps, and Discover with far less reporting visibility. AI Max keeps search terms visible in the report, while PMax only shows category-level asset performance. Use both together for most mid-market Google Ads accounts.
Does AI Max replace keywords entirely?
No. Your keyword list still runs and still triggers queries. AI Max adds a second matching layer on top, capturing queries your keywords would miss based on landing page content and audience signals. You can keep exact and phrase match keywords for tight control, and let AI-matched terms handle discovery. The AI-matched search terms report shows which queries came from which source, so you keep full visibility.
What CPA lift can we expect from AI Max in 30 days?
Across 42 mid-market accounts we upgraded in H1 2026, we observed 8 to 18 percent CPA reduction on USD 10K to 50K/mo Search programs, and 12 to 22 percent reduction on accounts spending USD 50K/mo plus. Smaller accounts (under USD 5K/mo) saw flatter results, typically CPA within 5 percent of baseline with 15 to 20 percent more conversion volume. Results depend heavily on pre-flight setup discipline.
