Why Paid Social Is Getting More Expensive and What to Do About It

By Nand Patel, Founder, New Public Media
Rising paid social ad costs and CPM trends in 2026
This guide pairs with our Our services , the same playbook we run on paying client accounts.
Quick answer: Paid social CPMs jumped 20 to 70 percent year over year in 2026 because more advertisers piled into the same auction while iOS privacy stripped 50 to 70 percent of attribution signal. The fix is not lower budget. It is more creative variants, Advantage plus Shopping, and server side tracking with monthly incrementality holdouts.

Paid social is getting more expensive because Meta CPMs jumped 20.1 percent year over year to 14.19 USD, TikTok costs rose 12.28 percent, iOS signal loss now hits 50 to 70 percent of attribution, and Meta absorbed 63 percent of DTC ad spend in Q1 2026. Cost inflation is structural, not cyclical. Winning in 2026 means shipping more creative variants, running Advantage plus Shopping, and rebuilding measurement around server side tracking and incrementality tests.

How Much More Expensive Has Paid Social Actually Gotten in 2026

Paid social costs are up 20 to 70 percent year over year across every major platform. Meta CPMs moved from 11.82 USD to 14.19 USD, a 20.1 percent lift. Meta CPCs went 0.70 to 0.78 USD, up 11.4 percent. Meta CPAs climbed from 27.66 to 38.19 USD, a 38.1 percent jump. TikTok CPMs sit between 6 and 12 USD depending on vertical, up 12.28 percent, with CPCs at 0.50 to 1.50 USD. One aggressive DTC dataset shows Meta CPMs of 22.76 to 38.70 USD in premium ecommerce categories, a 70 percent lift on the top end.

    Platform2025 CPM2026 CPMYoY change
    Meta (Feed and Stories)11.82 USD14.19 USD+20.1%
    Meta (premium DTC verticals)22.76 USD38.70 USD+70.0%
    TikTok5.34 USD6.00 to 12.00 USD+12.28%
    Instagram Reels7.10 USD6.89 USD-3.0%
Key takeaway: Only Reels CPMs are flat or dropping. Every other placement got materially more expensive.

Why Meta CPMs Keep Climbing While Reels CPMs Are Actually Falling

Reels CPMs are dropping because Reels inventory is expanding faster than advertiser demand. Reels grew from 19 percent of Instagram impressions in Q1 2025 to 33 percent in Q1 2026. Feed and Stories inventory shrank in relative share, so bids for those placements got pushed up. Advertisers who cannot ship vertical video get funneled into the smaller feed and stories pool and pay the premium. Instagram overall CPMs are down 3 percent year over year, but that average hides a two speed market. If you cannot ship vertical video, you are paying rent for shrinking inventory.

The brands we see win here shoot vertical first and cut three aspect ratios per hero asset: 1:1, 4:5, and 9:16. Meta's delivery system treats each aspect ratio as a separate creative and picks the placement with the cheapest CPM in real time.

The Real Reason Costs Are Rising: More Money, Same Auction

Rising CPMs are a demand problem, not a supply problem. Meta absorbed 63 percent of DTC ad spend in Q1 2026, up from 48 percent a year earlier. Google share dropped from 42 percent to 29 percent in the same window. Every dollar that moved from Google to Meta bid the Meta auction up. Q4 amplifies the effect: seasonal advertisers pile in and push CPCs 35 to 50 percent above Q3 baseline for six to eight weeks. See our Meta ads agency page for how we run the auction at scale.

There is no fix for the auction. There is only a better position inside it. That position is creative quality, structural consolidation into Advantage plus Shopping, and clean signal via CAPI.

How iOS Privacy Compounds the Cost Problem

iOS privacy has now stripped 50 to 70 percent of Meta's attribution signal, up from 30 to 40 percent in 2021. Three stacked releases caused the drift. iOS 14.5 (2021) introduced App Tracking Transparency with a 40 percent attribution loss on opt-out users. iOS 17 (September 2024) added Link Tracking Protection that strips fbclid parameters in Safari private browsing. iOS 18 (September 2025) expanded that stripping to more contexts. Apple documents both features in the Apple developer privacy pages.

Meta deprecated the 7 day view and 28 day view attribution windows on 12 January 2026. Reported conversions dropped 15 to 30 percent overnight for brands that did not rebuild measurement. The revenue was still there. The reporting was not. Advertisers who read the drop as a real drop cut spend that was actually working, then wondered why growth stalled.

Creative Is Now the Targeting: Why Ad Volume Compounds ROAS

Creative drives 56 percent of digital ad sales lift according to Nielsen's creative effectiveness meta-study. Brands testing 20 or more ads per month see plus 65 percent ROAS versus brands testing under 10. A 1 ad set by 25 creatives structure delivers plus 17 percent conversions at minus 16 percent CPA compared to a 5 by 5 structure. Advantage plus Creative delivers plus 22 percent ROAS versus manual creative on the same accounts.

Creative is now the targeting. Meta's ML picks the winner. Your job is to feed it enough variants to pick from. See our creative testing framework for Meta ads for the exact rotation we run.

The 100 USD AOV Rule: When AI Creative Beats Human Creative and When It Does Not

AI creative wins under 100 USD AOV and loses above it, at least until late 2026. AI generated static and video creative delivers plus 12 percent CTR, saves roughly 20 hours per week of production time, and lifts variant volume 5 to 10x. But we see AI creative drop conversions minus 8 percent on orders above 100 USD AOV, because higher-consideration purchases need human narrative and social proof the models do not yet fake convincingly. That gate is moving. We expect it to sit around 200 USD by Q4 2026 as the video models mature.

Rule of thumb: under 100 USD AOV, ship AI heavy and iterate weekly. Over 100 USD, keep human led narrative in the top of funnel and let AI handle iteration, aspect ratios, and localisation.

Advantage Plus Shopping and Andromeda: What Actually Works in the New Auction

Advantage plus Shopping now runs 62 percent of ecommerce spend on Meta at a 17 percent lower CPA than manual prospecting. Meta's Andromeda delivery system, which rolled out globally in October 2025, reads creative quality as a first class ranking signal, so a stronger hook now literally lowers your CPM in the auction. See Meta's Advantage plus Shopping documentation for the setup spec and our Advantage plus Shopping campaigns guide for the operator playbook.

Pattern we see across accounts: a DTC brand at 8,000 USD per month in spend, four legacy campaigns, blended CPA at 38 USD, ROAS 3.1x. We collapse the four campaigns into one Advantage plus Shopping campaign with 25 creatives across three aspect ratios. CPA moves from 38 to 24 USD in three weeks. ROAS lifts to 4.6x. Same budget, same margin, better auction position.

Rebuilding Measurement: Server Side Tracking, CAPI, and Incrementality

You cannot cut spend based on broken attribution. Once iOS strips 50 to 70 percent of your Meta signal, the numbers in Ads Manager are wrong before you open the tab. The fix is a three layer stack: server side tracking, platform APIs, and monthly incrementality holdouts. Our server side tracking with GTM setup guide walks the full build. Six step checklist:

    1. Stand up a server side GTM container on a subdomain of your site.
    2. Ship the Meta Conversions API through sGTM. Target Event Match Quality of 6.0 minimum, 9.0 target on Purchase.
    3. Enable Enhanced Conversions for Web on Google Ads with hashed email and phone.
    4. Standardise the GA4 event schema so revenue reconciles across Meta, Google, and Shopify.
    5. Run a monthly geo holdout incrementality test on your top campaign to size true lift, not last click revenue.
    6. Add media mix modelling quarterly as the tie breaker when platform and incrementality disagree.

What DTC and Local Service Brands Should Do This Quarter

Five plays protect ROAS this quarter regardless of vertical.

    1. Move to Advantage plus Shopping as default prospecting on Meta. Consolidate legacy prospecting campaigns into one ASC with 20 plus creatives.
    2. Ship 20 plus creative variants per month, at least 5 per angle, across three aspect ratios.
    3. Shoot vertical first. Cut 9:16 as the master, then derive 4:5 and 1:1. Reels inventory is the only placement getting cheaper.
    4. Deploy server side tracking with the Conversions API. Recover 40 to 60 percent of lost attribution and stop cutting budget on winning campaigns.
    5. Run a 4 week geo holdout on your largest campaign. Split matched regions into treatment and control, hold one dark, and measure the delta.

The Bigger Picture: Cost Inflation Is Structural, Efficiency Wins Are Operational

Rising CPMs are the auction working as designed, not a bug. As more capital chases fewer high intent impressions, cost per impression rises. The same asymmetry playing out in search referrals, where small sites lost 60 percent of traffic in two years while large publishers lost 22 percent, is now hitting paid social. The winners are operators who ship more creative, wire cleaner signal, and run disciplined incrementality tests. The losers are the ones who read broken attribution as broken performance and cut budget on campaigns that were actually working.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why are Meta CPMs so high in 2026?

Meta CPMs are up 20.1 percent year over year to 14.19 USD because more advertisers are piling into a static auction. Meta now absorbs 63 percent of DTC ad spend, up from 48 percent a year earlier. Google share dropped from 42 percent to 29 percent in the same dataset. Q4 adds another 35 to 50 percent CPC lift on top. Costs are structural, not seasonal.

Is paid social still worth it if costs keep rising?

Yes, for brands that can produce creative at volume and rebuild measurement. Brands testing 20 or more ads per month see plus 65 percent ROAS versus those testing under 10. Advantage plus Shopping runs at a 17 percent lower CPA than manual prospecting. The advertisers cutting budget are usually the ones with broken iOS attribution reporting 30 percent lower conversions than actually happened.

What is the single biggest lever to protect ROAS in 2026?

Fix your measurement first, then scale creative volume. iOS privacy has now stripped 50 to 70 percent of Meta's attribution signal. Server side tracking with the Conversions API at Event Match Quality 9.0 recovers 40 to 60 percent of that loss. Once your data is right, ship 20 plus creative variants per month across three aspect ratios. Everything else is secondary.
